Eindelijk weer tijd om te schrijven! Mijn 'gekkenwerk'baan als invaldocent zit erop en joehei; tot de zomervakantie mag ik blijven voor een aantal uur. Missschien zit er ook nog wel een baan in voor volgend jaar! Happy happy, joy joy!
Finally, some time to write again! My 'madness' job as temp-teacher is done and hooray; they want me to stay and teach for a couple of hours more till the summer holidays. I might even have a job next school year! Happy happy, joy joy!

Naast ontdekt worden als fotograaf, was ik ook erg druk met de Ravelympics. Een online brei-evenement gedurende de Olympische Spelen. Reisreus heeft hier een korte en goede nederlandstalige uitleg staan. Mijn uitdaging? Binnen twee weken een paar sokken afbreien! Doordat ik moet werken, zoveel dingen leuk vind naast het breien en vaak met meerdere brei-projecten tegelijk bezig ben, lukt het me vrijwel nooit snel een paar sokken te breien. Gemiddeld doe ik er drie maanden(!) over...
Gelukt! In minder dan twee weken heb ik een paar sokken weten te breien! Hoera!!!
Besides getting discovered as photographer, I was also very busy with the Ravelympics. An online knitting event which takes place during the Olympics. My challenge? Knit a pair of socks within two weeks! Besides work, and all my other fun activities, I'm usually working on more than one knitting project at the same time. Usually it takes me three months(!) to finish a pair of socks...
I did it! In less than two weeks I finished a pair of socks! Hurray!!!

Smikkelen en smullen, wat hebben wij gisteren een hoop gegeten...
Het is Beef Wellington met gehakt van Jamie Oliver - DutchAstrid stijl!
(Opgediend met geglaceerde worteltjes.)
My tweaks to the recipe:
- I halved all the ingredients, except the egg (obviously) and the veggies.
- I replaced all the veggies, except the carrot and the peas, with a bag of 250 grams ready-to-use pre-cut mushrooms, leeks and red onion.
- To spice things up a little, I added parsley and a good dollop of Dyon mustard to the beef mix.
Wat ik aan het recept veranderd heb:
- Alle ingredienten gehalveerd, behalve het ei (duh...) en de groente.
- Behalve de wortel en doperwtjes, heb ik alle groente vervangen door een zakje kant-en-klaar prei, champignons en rode ui mix van 250 gram.
- En voor een beetje pit: een halve eetlepel Dyon mosterd en peterselie door de gehaktmix.

Just so you know; I'm still alive. It's been a bit quiet around here, that's because I found a temporary teaching job.

Ik leef nog, hoor. Het is hier behoorlijk rustig geweest, omdat ik een invalbaan als lerares heb gevonden.
Sinds januari werk ik het klokje rond; alle namen bij gezichten proberen te onthouden en al die nieuwe indrukken... En dan ook nog het werk zelf doen. Dan weet je het even. Ik beloof plechtig snel weer wat van me te laten horen!

The result of our waffle making attempts!
Astrid's Waffle recipe
125 grams flour
0.5 teaspoon of salt
1 teaspoon of cinnamon
1 tablespoon of sugar
100 ml hand-warm milk
100 ml water
10 grams dried yeast
1 egg
50 grams melted butter
Mix all dry ingredients in a bowl.
Mix all wet ingredients in a another bowl or jug.
Add the wet mix to the dry mix and whisk until smooth.
Add the butter and whisk firmly through the dough.
Leave the batter to rest under a cloth in a warm room for about an hour.
Use the waffle maker to taste and machine's manual.
Het resultaat van onze wafelbakpogingen!
Astrid's Wafel recept
125 gram bloem
0,5 theelepel zout
1 theelepels kaneel
1 eetlepel suiker
1 dl lauw melk
1 dl water
10 gram gist
1 ei
50 gram gesmolten boter
Meng alle droge ingrediënten in een beslagkom.
Meng alle natte ingrediënten in een andere kom of kan.
Roer de natte mix bij de droge mix tot een glad beslag.
mix de boter er door.
Laat dit beslag een uurtje rusten onder een theedoek op een warme plek.
Wafelijzer gebruiken naar smaak en volgens de instructies van het apparaat.

Hardly two days of frost, the first loonies are already venturing out on the ice, but I too must confess: in three weeks time I expect an Elfstedentocht. Yes indeed, the Eleven Cities Skating Marathon! Don't try to reason with me... It's no use, Jack Frost has frozen my rationality, despite the chullo! All signs point in one direction. Even Jeen van den Berg says so (1:05): "You people don't know it yet (...), but in three weeks time we'll have the real thing! Because it's starting to freeze..."

Na krap twee dagen vorst, wagen de eerste gekken zich alweer op het ijs, maar ook ik moet bekennen: over drie weken verwacht ik een Elfstedentocht. Jazeker, een Elfstedentocht! Probeer me maar niet tot rede te brengen... Het heeft geen zin, koning Winter heeft mijn denkvermogen bevroren, ondanks mijn muts! Alle tekenen wijzen in dezelfde richting. Sometimes you have to do a little hiding, and sometimes, sometimes you have to make yourself lost on the Moon! That's what I did these last months. As many people know I am trying to graduate for my teacher's degree English, and to do that I need to finish one big master research paper and a humongous specialism file to prove my didactic skills. Especially the second assignment is procrastination temptress! I needed to cut myself off; I needed to go to the Moon to finish that **** file.
So I hardly went to Stitch and Bitch meetings, I didn't start any new projects, I couldn't allow myself to blog or post pics on Flickr. I've been quite tough on myself... But I did it! It's nearly finished! Hurray!!!
Guess what else I finished...
Soms moet je jezelf een beetje verstoppen, en soms, soms moet je jezelf laten verdwijnen naar de maan! Dat is wat ik de laatste paar maanden gedaan heb. Zoals veel mensen weten, probeer ik af te studeren als docent Engels en om af te ronden moet ik een grote scriptie schrijven en een heul heul heul grote competentie map voor mijn specialisatie. En vooral die laatste is de grote uitstel verleidster! Ik moest mezelf isoleren; ik moest naar de maan om die **** map af te ronden.
Dus ging ik amper naar Stitch en Bitch avonden, begon ik geen nieuwe projecten, en mocht ik niet van mezelf bloggen of foto's op Flickr plaatsen. Ik ben best wel streng voor mezelf geweest... Maar het is gelukt! Het is bijna klaar! Joepiedepoepie!!!
Raad eens wat nog meer af is...
Despite trying to banish myself to the Moon, I did learn a new technique: entrelac. So now I'm knitting entrelac socks for Karsten. It's a bit addictive. I keep wanting to finish a segment, than starting a new segment, and wanting to finish that segm.... You get the idea.
I also decided to frog the "Who Can Resist the Call of the Clap? A.k.a. Clapotis nr. 11169" shawl. I was bored and the colours became horrible as I progressed. Entrelac! My new magic technique! It shall be an entrelac scarf! But I won't start the project until I've finished writing my paper! Must be strict here....
Ondanks dat ik mezelf naar de maan had verbannen, heb ik toch nog een nieuwe techniek geleerd: entrelac. Dus nu brei ik entrelac sokken voor Karsten. Het is maar een beetje verslavend. Ik wil de hele tijd een blokje afbreien, dan begin ik weer een nieuw blokje, en dan wil ik die weer afron... Je snapt het wel.
Ik heb ook besloten om de "Who Can Resist the Call of the Clap? A.k.a. Clapotis nr. 11169" sjaal uit te halen. Ik was er klaar mee en de kleuren werden steeds gruwelijker naarmate ik verder kwam. Entrelac! M'n nieuwe magische methode! Het gaat een entrelac sjaal worden! Maar ik zal niet eerder beginnen, dan nadat ik klaar ben het afronden van mijn studie! Moet streng zijn...
But why did I mention the Black Forest in this blog's title?
Karsten took me there during Fall break to have a... break from all the typing. We walked around the Schluchsee, we drank a few beers, and we went to the local supermarket: Schmidt's Märkte. Guess what they sold!? YARN!!!! This was the best vacation ever! And if you ever get in the neighbourhood: buy this jam! I can't stop eating it.
Maar waarom noem ik nu toch dat Zwarte Woud in de titel van dit blog?
Omdat Karsten me in de herfstvakantie daar mee naartoe heeft genomen voor een pauze van al dat typen. We zijn rond de Schluchsee gelopen, we hebben een paar biertjes gedronken, en we gingen naar de plaatselijke supermarkt: Schmidt's Märkte. Driemaal raden wat ze daar verkochten!? WOL!!! De beste vakantie ooit! En mocht je ooit in de buurt zijn: Koop deze jam! Ik kan er maar niet van af blijven.
After seeing her post about her beautiful Delft-Blue Blanket, something started to itch. My crochet-genes wanted attention and before I knew it, I was sucked into this blog about crocheting hexagons and rummaging in my stash for cotton! Since I don't know what it will be, yet, I named the project 'Que Sera Sera' after the song by Doris Day.
So, now all my knitting lies forlorn in their basket, waiting till the crochet bug flies off again. Bzzzz...
Toen ik haar blogje zag over haar mooie Delftsblauwe Plaid, begon er bij mij ook iets te kriebelen. Mijn haakgenen wilden aandacht en wel nu! En voor ik er erg in had, werd ik dit artikel ingezogen over het haken van hexagonlapjes en zat ik in mijn voorraad te zoeken naar katoen! Maarja, omdat ik nog niet weet wat het worden zal, heb ik het project maar 'Que Sera Sera' genoemd naar het liedje van Doris Day.
En nu ligt al mijn breiwerk vergeten in het mandje, te wachten tot de het haakbeestje weer weggevlogen is. Bzzz...
And of course it couldn't remain with just one project. I also started up an 'All Shawl' by Doris Chan; just in case we do get an Eleven Cities Tour next winter.
And I decided to upgrade my Left-Overs Bag with nice crocheted handles. When finished, pics will follow, promised!
En natuurlijk kon het niet bij één project blijven. Ik ben ook begonnen aan een 'All Shawl' van Doris Chan. Je weet maar nooit, stel dat we komende winter wel een Elfstedentocht krijgen.
En ik vond dat mijn Left-Overs Bag wel wat verbetering kon gebruiken, dus nu haak ik daar een paar fatsoenlijke banden bij. Zodra af, volgen de foto's, beloofd!
Besides my summer projects, I found another new hobby: helping with and following a hot air balloon. As if I didn't already have hobbies, I sometimes join Folkert and his crew of Hollandia Ballooning for the fun of it. Hot air balloons have something magical about them. Naast mijn zomer projectjes, heb ik ook nog een andere nieuwe hobby gevonden: helpen met en het volgen van een heteluchtballon. Alsof ik nog geen hobby's had, ga ik nu soms met Folkert en zijn crew van Hollandia Ballooning mee op pad. Een heteluchtballon heeft iets magisch. Ik kan er nooit genoeg van krijgen en ik heb altijd het verlangen om er weer mee op te stijgen.* Mocht je meer willen zien, ga dan hier heen.
* Once apon a time I won a hot air balloon flight by solving a crossword puzzle in an undertaker's magazine (for real!). My first and only flight, since ballooning is horrifying expensive when you have my salary.
* Met een kruiswoord puzzel in Yarden Magazine, heb ik ooit een ballonvaart gewonnen. Mijn eerste en enige vaart, omdat ballonvaren zo afschuwelijk duur is met mijn inkomen.

Karsten found it while cutting our... guess what: Hedges! It was sound asleep and had found a cool spot under our shrubberies. So I took some pics and we left that bit of shrubbery uncut. A hedgehog... So cute!

Karsten vond hem terwijl hij onze heggetjes aan het knippen was. Hij had onder onze bosjes een lekker koel plekje gevonden en was diep in slaap. Dus heb ik snel wat foto's genomen en dat stukje heg lieten we maar even voor wat het was. Een egeltje... Zo lief!
On the fourth of July we went to 'Live at Westerpark: Lenny Kravitz'. Awesome show! Sold out of course and as you can tell: we had a great time.
we zijn op 4 juli ook nog naar Lenny Kravitz in het Westerpark geweest. Geweldig! Uitverkocht natuurlijk en zoals je kunt zien: we hadden het naar ons zin.
As usual in Summer, knitting has been a bit slow. So much to do and so little time. But I did finish my 'No Knotty Rainbow Socks' and I finally made some progress on my Clap. I also started a new project: a Neiman jumper with the birds from 'Little Birds cardigan'.
Zoals altijd in de zomer staat breien op een laag pitje. Zo veel te doen en zo weinig tijd. Maar ik heb mijn 'No Knotty Rainbow Sokken' af en ik heb ook eindelijk wat kunnen breien aan mijn Clap. Ik ben ook aan een nieuw project begonnen: een Neiman trui met de vogeltjes van het 'Little Birds Vestje'.
